halloween-smallWhat’s the first thing you think of when Halloween season comes around? Costumes? Fall? Spooky things? How about Candy? Well, we’re sure one thing isn’t on your mind: Your dental health. But it should be!

With all the sugary candy being handed out, your kids should know some of these important facts about what sweets can do to your teeth. Maybe you should too, because who doesn’t like to grab a bag of candy to munch on from time to time?

One of the most important things you need to know is how candy can hurt your teeth. It should come as no surprise, really, because it’s one of the main ingredients – sugar. This sweet substance feeds the bacteria in your mouth, helping them to multiply. Most sugars can be pretty sticky too, making them more difficult for just your saliva or water to wash it away.

The easiest way to help you and your children keep the sticky stuff off of your teeth is to limit your intake. We know how hard this can be, but the more sugar you eat, the more there is to decay your teeth!

Another thing you should do is watch the time when you eat it! Limiting the amount of time the sugar stays in contact with your teeth can be very important. You should brush your teeth about half an hour after you’re done eating sugary foods. Drinking lots of water will also help, as it washes some of the food away.

Don’t let poor dental hygiene spoil your Halloween fun this year! Be sure and follow these easy tips to keep the scary cavities visits away!
