Fortunately or unfortunately, it turns out that most New Year’s resolutions fail. Mostly we fail them. Experts estimate that only 8% of us are successful in keeping true to ourselves and establishing new goals. There are any number of ways that you can increase the odds, though!

When you’re making goals, be very specific, for example. Instead of saying I want to lose weight, experts advise us to be very clear. Make your goal to eat better, eat vegetables every day or no eating after 8:00 P.M. If your goal is to exercise more, include the time and days of the week you plan on exercising,. If you have no plan, there’s effectively nothing to fail. Make a very specific plan.

As well, choose goals that are important to you. Most of us have similar New Year’s resolution, i.e. lose weight, exercise more, and save money are among the top resolutions each year. Make yours something important to you! If you’ve been wanting to create more family time, perhaps a goal of eating dinner as a family a few times a week or instituting a Tech Free Tuesday is the answer! You are more likely to keep the resolutions that are most important to you.

Here’s another good tip: outsource your resolution to someone else. Been hankering for a brighter, whiter smile for a minute? Give Finney Family Dentistry a call! We’ll consult with you, set a plan with you, and then we’ll do it for you. Just as you wanted, just like that! You can farm out your resolution to us and yes–you can absolutely take all the credit for it.
